Momi shells モミシェル

"Momi" is the Hawaiian word for Pearl. 

Momi shells are mostly oval in shape with shiny surfaces. Pearl-like and true to their name.  Momi shells are from the molluscan family Columbellidae, and are sometimes called Dove shells. Momi shells vary in color and size. The smallest size can be 4 mm long x2 mm in width. The larger sizes can range from 7-8 mm long x 5-6 mm width and up.

  • Momi ‘Ōnikiniki, “spotted Momi”
  • Momi Lenalena, “yellow Momi shell”
  • Momi Ke’oke’o, “white Momi”
  • Momi Kahakaha Ikaika dark golden Momi shells (the word ikika in Hawaiian means strong/powerful and the word kahakaha describes them as striped)
  • Momi Kahakaha ‘ahiehie is golden Momi shells (the word ‘ahiehie means faded)
  • Momi Uliuli, blue gray color
  • Peach beige colored Momi shells are very unusual. 
  • The word waha ‘ula’ula is used to describe the dark red/burgundy color seen on these shells.
  • The word waha ‘ele’ele is used to describe the dark brown/ almost back color shown on the shells near their ends.
