Momi & Kahelelani Shell Lei
Featuring Combined Kipona & Crown Flower Styles
This is truly one of my favorite designs! This unique Niʻihau shell lei combines two traditional styles—the Kipona style, where multiple types of shells are blended together, and the Crown Flower (Pīkake) style, which mimics the soft, clustered form of the pīkake blossom.
The majority of the lei is created in the Kipona style, using both Momi and Kahelelani shells woven in the classic pīkake tying technique. One special section of the lei is crafted in the crown flower style, using only yellow Momi Lenalena shells, giving the piece beautiful texture and variation.
