Handmade Shell Poking Tool – For Momi & Kahelelani Shells/ Short length needle

Essential Tool for Niʻihau Shell Jewelry Artists

This handmade tool is specially crafted to poke Momi and Kahelelani shells, making it an essential for anyone creating Hawaiian heirloom jewelry. It’s a rare find and a true time-saver — minimizing both frustration and finger pokes!

Features:

  • Needle:
    Made from high-quality spring steel.
It can be resharpened with a file as needed.
⚠️ Please sharpen carefully — the tip should be sharp, but not too fine, as overly thin tips may bend during use.

  • Handle:
Crafted from solid Teak and Makor woods.
Smooth, comfortable to hold, and built to last for years.

  • Natural Variation:
Each handle is one-of-a-kind. Wood grain and color will vary naturally.
Please note: specific wood tones or patterns cannot be requested.

From Janjira:

I personally commissioned a talented woodworker to create these tools for both my own use and for fellow artists. They've truly been a game-changer in my jewelry-making process!

Janjira’s Personal Tip:

For Momi shells, I usually prefer a medium-length needle — the added length helps guide the point through the shell after trimming, and gives better control, especially with longer or thicker shells.

When working with Kahelelani shells, I often still use the medium-length needle, but sometimes switch to a shorter one for even more precision. Since Kahelelani are smaller and more delicate, the shorter needle offers a little extra control.
Both lengths work great — it’s all about finding what’s most comfortable for you with practice.
