These authentic Niʻihau shell earrings are handcrafted in the traditional Poepoe style, where each tiny shell is strung one at a time to create a rounded, textured look. The design features a soft blend of Kahelelani Keʻokeʻo (white), gentle ʻŌmaʻomaʻo (light green), and deep ʻUlaʻula (red burgundy) shells — a striking combination that highlights the natural beauty of genuine Niʻihau shells.
In Hawaiian, Keʻokeʻo refers to white, but what you see here is what I often call the “natural color” of Kahelelani shells. It’s the most commonly found shade, with a creamy base and sometimes delicate light pink bands circling around the shells — just like you can see in this pair.
For these earrings, I used Kahelelani shells in size 13.5 to create the even, full-bodied texture. And just in case you’d like to try making your own Niʻihau shell jewelry (ニイハウ シェル ジュエリー), I also have loose shells available in my Kahelelani shells category on the website.
A white Puka shell crowns the top, adding a classic island touch. This pair captures the timeless artistry of authentic Niʻihau jewelry, carrying the warmth of Hawaiʻi’s beaches and the aloha spirit in every detail.
