These authentic Niʻihau shell earrings are crafted in the classic Poepoe style, where each shell is strung close together to form a rounded, elegant design. At just 1" long, this petite pair is light, comfortable, and easy to wear, while still carrying the timeless beauty of Niʻihau shells.
The earrings feature a colorful blend of Kahelelani ʻUlaʻula (red burgundy), soft ʻĀkala Pua (pink flower), deep ʻŌmaʻomaʻo (green), and Kahelelani Keʻokeʻo (natural white with pink banding). In Hawaiian, Keʻokeʻo refers to white, but what you see here is what I often call the “natural color” of Kahelelani shells. It’s the most commonly found shade, with a creamy base and sometimes delicate light pink bands circling around the shells — just like you can see in this pair.
For this set, I used Kahelelani shells size 13.5, carefully selected for their even size and balance. Each earring is topped with a polished Puka shell and finished with 14k gold-filled ear wires, blending natural Hawaiian beauty with a touch of refined elegance.
✨ In a future blog, I’ll be sharing more about the different Poepoe designs — what they mean, how they’re created, and the stories behind them. Please check back on my blog page to see more updates as I continue to share the art of Niʻihau shell jewelry.
