This elegant ten-strand Niʻihau shell lei is handcrafted with delicate Laiki shells (ライキシェル), also known as rice shells, in soft off-white and yellowish beige tones. Each shell belongs to the Columbellidae family, species Mitrella margarita, and has been meticulously hand-cleaned to remove all sand. This careful process brings out their natural shine, making the shells appear brighter and cleaner. Because it is so time-intensive, most lei makers prefer to leave sand inside the shells — but in this lei, every strand gleams with purity and luster.
The ten strands flow gracefully in the traditional Laiki style, creating a soft fullness that drapes beautifully across the chest. Finished with polished brown granulated cowrie shells, the clasp adds both strength and elegance to the design.
