Three-Strand Niʻihau Shell Lei – Rare Momi & Kahelelani Shells in Pikake and Heleconia Styles
One of my very favorite designs, crafted with love and aloha.
This exquisite three-strand Niʻihau shell lei is a one-of-a-kind creation that combines two traditional Niʻihau patterns—pikake and heliconia styles—into a breathtaking, heirloom-quality piece.
? Pikake Style Pattern
This portion of the lei is made from some of the rarest and most beautiful Momi shell colors ever found on Niʻihau:
-
Uliuli (deep blue) – one of the rarest colors in Niʻihau shell jewelry
-
Lenalena (buttery yellow)
-
ʻŌnikiniki ʻEleʻele (black-spotted)
-
ʻŌnikiniki ʻĀhiehie (brown-spotted)
-
Kahakaha ʻĀhiehie (golden banded)
-
Keʻokeʻo Maikaʻi (pure white)
? Heleconia Style Pattern
The lei is highlighted with a colorful cluster of Kahelelani shells, adding a dramatic and vibrant contrast:
-
ʻEleʻele (black)
-
ʻĀkala Pua (soft pink)
-
ʻŌmaʻomaʻo (green)
-
ʻUlaʻula (deep red/burgundy)
-
Keʻokeʻo (natural white)
-
Kamoa Lenalena (yellow)
-
Kamoa ʻIliʻālani (bright yellow)
-
Chocolate
Each shell was carefully selected and woven together to reflect the colors and harmony of the Hawaiian islands. This piece truly represents the spirit and tradition of Pūpū o Niʻihau artistry.
