More Than Just a Beach Day — A Labor of Love, Patience, and Joy
The Beginning of How ShellsHawaii.com Came to Be ✨
Kauai (カウアイ島) is truly one of the most beautiful islands in Hawaii, with so many stunning beaches scattered along its shores — some so hidden that many people don’t even know how to find them.
And since it’s my home, I might be a little bit biased — but in my heart, Kauai holds a special place as one of the most beautiful places on earth.
My very first shelling adventure took place on a beach along Kauai’s North Shore (カウアイ島 ビーチ). It was a perfect day — clear blue skies, warm sunshine, and the ocean sparkling in shades of deep blue and emerald as the sunlight danced on the waves.
But here’s a little secret not everyone knows:
Not every beach on Kauai has Kahelelani shells (カヘレラニ シェル).
You really have to know where to go.
Those who do know these special places often keep them close to their hearts — and I truly respect that. Protecting these treasures is part of honoring their beauty and magic.
The Real Way to Find Kahelelani Shells
Finding Kahelelani shells (カヘレラニ 貝殻) isn’t like heading to the beach with a pan to scoop up piles of sand and expect a big handful of shells. Nope… nope… nope! That’s just not how it works.
I learned this the hard way — but honestly, that’s the best way to learn, right? ?
Most times, you’re lucky to spot just one shell at a time. And if you do find two side by side, but your tweezers can only grab one… oh my! Your heart skips a beat as you hold your breath, eyes wide open, hoping the shell is still there when you look again.
But often? When you blink… it’s gone. Just part of the magic and mystery of shell hunting (ビーチコーミング).
To collect Kahelelani shells, you gently pick them up one by one, patiently and carefully. And then hope that the shell you hold is in good condition — ready to become part of something beautiful.
The Secret Ground — More Than Just Knowing the Beach
Finding Kahelelani shells is about so much more than just knowing which beach to visit.
You have to know how to look, what to look for, and be ready for a true labor of love.
It’s not just a beautiful day at the beach — with warm sunshine and gentle ocean breezes. It’s work.
This is the very beginning of your journey, long before a shell becomes a beautiful piece of Hawaiian shell jewelry (ハワイアン シェル ジュエリー).
I’ve learned so much from this process — from my own experiences and mistakes.
The truth is, you have to love what you do with all your heart to accomplish your goal of becoming a Niihau shell creator (ニイハウ シェル).
