Aloha and welcome to ShellsHawaii blog everyone,
My name is Janjira, and I’m the hands and heart behind ShellsHawaii.com.
Niʻihau shell jewelry to me is an amazing art form created from incredibly tiny shells. The first time I saw it, I could not stop thinking about how anyone could work with something so small and turn it into such beautiful art.
How I Fell in Love with This Art
One day, I saw a woman wearing a Niʻihau shell lei. At the time, I didn’t even know what it was called, but the shells were so tiny, delicate, and beautiful — unlike anything I had ever seen before. The more I looked at it, the more fascinated I became.
At first, I never imagined I would try creating it myself. I truly did not think I could. But little by little, my curiosity grew stronger. One day, someone told me, “You can’t do it. You’ll never figure it out on your own.” Those words stayed with me for a long time. They didn’t stop me — they quietly pushed me to keep trying and learning for myself.
Many years ago, there were not really classes that taught how to make Niʻihau shell jewelry. There were no online videos or easy information to find like today. My sources of information were very limited, so I had no choice but to try everything myself and learn from my mistakes over and over until I slowly figured out how to do it. With time, practice, and patience, I continued improving my work and techniques little by little.
I didn’t know where to collect shells or who to buy them from. I had no idea where to begin. So I started walking the beaches more often, quietly searching the shoreline and hoping to find those tiny treasures in the sand. I still remember the very first shell I found. It was just one tiny shell, but to me it felt like a small victory.
From that moment, something changed inside me. The more shells I found, the more deeply I fell in love with the art itself — the patience, the tiny details, the colors, and the feeling of turning something so small into something meaningful and beautiful.
My Early Learning Experience
As my love for the art grew deeper, I wanted to understand everything about the shells — where they came from, how difficult they were to find, and why they were so treasured. I wanted to learn the colors, the sizes, the Hawaiian names, and the patience behind every piece.
When you truly want to learn something from beginning to end, you cannot only listen to what others say. You have to experience it yourself — every step, every mistake, and every small success. Only then do you begin to understand the real value behind each shell and the work it takes to turn it into something beautiful.
Over time, I slowly began understanding the shells — their weight, curves, colors, and delicate differences. I learned which shells were too fragile to use, which colors looked best together, and how to string them so they would fall naturally and beautifully. There were no shortcuts. Just many hours of patience, mistakes, practice, and slowly improving little by little.
Along the way, a few kind people helped me. One woman showed me a sample piece. One man quietly watched me work and gently told me, “You’re poking the shells the wrong way.” That one sentence changed everything for me.
Eventually, I finished my first real pair of handmade Niʻihau shell earrings. Then something amazing happened — someone wanted to buy them. The moment she said, “I’ll take it,” I felt proud, nervous, excited, and grateful all at once.
That was the moment I realized this was no longer just curiosity. This art had truly become part of my life.
To me, Niʻihau shell jewelry is much more than decoration. It is part of a Hawaiian tradition filled with patience, beauty, history, and aloha. These tiny shells may look simple at first, but once you begin working with them, you quickly realize how special they truly are.
ShellsHawaii.com became my way of sharing that feeling with others through every piece I create. Over time, I also started writing blogs so I could share some of my personal experiences and hopefully provide helpful information for people who love these tiny shells. I hope the more you learn and understand about Niʻihau shell jewelry, the more you can truly enjoy and appreciate the beauty and art behind it.
Thank you so much for being here, for reading my story, and for supporting this beautiful Hawaiian tradition. I truly hope my work brings you a little joy and a small feeling of aloha wherever you are in the world.
With aloha always,
Janjira
