Aloha and welcome to my blog everyone,
Have you ever found yourself staring at something beautiful — maybe a pair of Niʻihau shell earrings or a shimmering set of loose shells — and thinking, “I really love this… but I’m not sure yet.”
You add it to your cart, maybe even a few times. You imagine how it would look, what you could make, or how it would feel to wear it — but something inside whispers, “Maybe later.”
You start wondering:
• Is it really authentic?
• Will it look the same in person?
• Are the shells really that small?
• How fragile are they — will I break them?
• Is it worth the price?
• Where would I wear them if I don’t live in Hawaiʻi?
• Will they look right on me?
• What if I buy them and never wear them?
• What if I don’t know how to use the loose shells once I get them?
• What if I’m simply not ready yet?
That small pause doesn’t mean you don’t love what you see. It usually means you care about authenticity, quality, value, and choosing something that truly feels right for you.
This guide is here to help answer some of the common questions many people have before purchasing Niʻihau shell jewelry or loose shells for the first time. Every shell you see here is carefully cleaned, sorted, and prepared by my own hands with patience and aloha.
Is It Really Authentic?
Yes — everything you see here is made with genuine Hawaiian shells collected from Niʻihau and Kauaʻi. At times, I also use granulated cowrie shells from Oʻahu as accents in certain designs.
Each design in my finished jewelry features carefully sorted A-grade shells, prepared by hand every step of the way. The matching colors, sizes, and rarity of the shells make every piece one of a kind, and you will receive the exact piece shown in the photos.
The same care goes into my loose shell supplies, and I photograph the shells myself in natural light so you can see their true color and natural luster as closely as possible.
Pieces priced over $500 automatically include a Certificate of Authenticity, and certificates are also available separately upon request. If you would like to learn more about certificates, insurance, and coverage for Niʻihau shell jewelry, you are always welcome to read my blog here:

Are the Shells Really That Small?
Yes — they truly are, and that is part of what makes them so special. Many Niʻihau shells are only a few millimeters in size, and every necklace, bracelet, lei, or pair of earrings is made from hundreds of tiny shells that must be hand-sorted, cleaned, poked, and strung one by one.
For first-time loose shell buyers, the size can sometimes be surprising because close-up photos often make the shells appear larger than they are in person. But once you hold them in your hand, you begin to understand why shell artists treasure them so deeply. Their tiny size creates the delicate detail, soft movement, and natural glow that make Niʻihau shell jewelry so unique.
Collecting enough matching shells in the right size, color, and quality can take many days — sometimes much longer for rare colors or larger sizes.
How Fragile Are They?
Niʻihau shells are delicate, but they are often stronger than people expect. When handled carefully, Niʻihau shell jewelry can last for generations, and many older shell leis and jewelry pieces are still beautiful today after decades of wear and care.
These tiny shells have already survived years moving naturally through ocean sand and waves before ever becoming jewelry. If you are working with loose shells yourself, patience is very important, and occasionally breaking a shell while poking or stringing is completely normal, even for experienced shell artists.
Their beauty comes from balancing both delicacy and strength together.
Will It Look the Same in Person?
That is a very good question, and something I take seriously.
I photograph my jewelry and loose shells in natural light to help show the true colors as accurately as possible. Sometimes I slightly adjust a photo only to help it match what I see in person more closely. If you would like to learn more about how I photograph my jewelry and whether you will receive the exact item shown, you are always welcome to read my blog here:
Will I Receive the Exact Item Shown in the Photos?
Every screen and phone displays color differently, so exact color matching can never be perfect for every device. But my goal is always for the jewelry or shells to look as close as possible to what you expected when you open the package.
Where Can I Wear Niʻihau Shell Jewelry?
You do not need to live in Hawaiʻi to appreciate or wear Niʻihau shell jewelry. These shells carry a quiet natural beauty that can be worn anywhere — whether at the beach, in the city, during special occasions, or simply as part of everyday life.
Many people begin with a small pair of earrings or a simple bracelet and are surprised by how meaningful and calming the jewelry feels once worn. Even if you wear it only occasionally, the piece often becomes connected to a memory, a feeling, or a personal appreciation for the islands and the artistry behind the shells.
Will They Look Right on Me?
Yes, absolutely. Niʻihau shell jewelry is not about trends or trying to become someone else. The natural tones and soft glow of shells like Momi and Kahelelani complement many different skin tones beautifully, and these pieces are meant to enhance natural beauty in a soft and timeless way.
What If I Buy Them and Never Wear Them?
That is perfectly okay too. Some people wear their jewelry often, while others simply treasure the beauty, meaning, or memories connected to the piece itself. I have customers who purchase a piece simply because it spoke to them emotionally or reminded them of Hawaiʻi, the ocean, or a meaningful moment in life.
You do not need a special reason to appreciate beauty or craftsmanship.
What If I’m Not Ready Yet?
That is completely okay. Take your time learning, exploring, and asking questions. Purchasing Niʻihau shell jewelry or loose shells should feel exciting and meaningful — not rushed.
Whether you are looking for your first pair of earrings, your first shell lei, or your first loose shell supplies for jewelry making, I hope my blogs and educational pages help make the experience feel less intimidating and more enjoyable. The right piece will still be there when the time feels right.

Closing Thoughts
When you feel tempted by a certain piece, there may be many reasons why. I hope some of the information above helps make your decision feel a little easier and more comfortable.
With my collection, you may notice there are many different designs to choose from. One reason for that is because I photograph each piece individually so you can see the actual shells, colors, and details of every design. Taking photos of each item takes extra time, but I truly enjoy creating one-of-a-kind pieces, and many designs may never be recreated again because the shell sizes, colors, and natural matching are always different.
If you have questions before purchasing, you are always welcome to contact me anytime. I am always happy to help.

With aloha always,
